PHArA-ON: Pilots for Healthy and Active Ageing.
PI: Scuola Superiori Sant’Anna (Italy, Global IP), M.V. Bueno Delgado (IP UPCT)
Reference: H2020-SC1-FA-DTS-2018-2020 – 857188
Duration: December 2019 - November 2023
Consortium: 41 European Partners from 12 different countries (Portugal, Spain, UK, Italy, Croatia, France, Estonia, Belgium, Netherlands, Slovenia, Germany, Austria).
Pharaon’s overall objective is to make a reality smart and active living for Europe’s ageing population by creating a set of integrated and highly customizable interoperable open platforms with advanced services, devices, and tools including IoT, artificial intelligence, robotics, cloud computing, smart wearables, big data, and intelligent analytics. Platform interoperability will be implemented within Pharaon ecosystems and platforms, as well as other standardised platforms within health and other domains (energy, transport and smart cities). Pharaon will consider relevant standards and will contribute to them with the help of the two standardisation bodies of the consortium. Data privacy, cybersecurity, interoperability and openness will be key design principles to pursue through the requirements generated by Pharaon experts.

Pharaon will be built upon mature existing state-of-the-art open platforms and technologies/tools provided by the partners, which will be customised and will implement cloud technologies, AI techniques and traditional algorithms for big data intelligent analytics. A user-centric approach will be followed. Pharaon will evolve based on the user feedback and the results from a MAFEIP framework that will be implemented for impact assessment. Both inputs will be used to find innovative solutions through two “open calls”: (1) single solutions, and (2) solutions to be demonstrated in small-scale pilots. Pharaon’s integrated platforms will be validated in two stages: pre-validation and large-scale pilots (LSPs), in six different pilot sites: Murcia and Andalusia (Spain), Portugal, The Netherlands, Slovenia and Italy. A team of partners in each pilot will ensure its right development. A set of development tools will be created and made publicly available to simplify the customisation and integration. These tools and the results of dissemination will spread the generated knowledge to promote the development of new solutions similar to Pharaon.

INSPIRING-SNI INvestigating SDN Programmability ImpRovING optical South- and North- bound Interfaces
INSPIRING-SNI INvestigating SDN Programmability ImpRovING optical South- and North- bound Interfaces
PI: Pablo Pavón Mariño
Reference: EU MSCA-IF-EF-ST – Standard EF (ID 750611)
Duration: from 01/03/2018 to 29/04/2020
Consortium: UPCT
INvestigating SDN Programmability ImpRovING optical South- and North- bound Interfaces (INSPIRING-SNI) aims to enhance programmability in SDN ecosystems addressing two critical aspects. First, INSPIRING-SNI will control, manage and operate technology diverse environments through the SouthBound Interface (SBI) relying on innovative industry-driven standardization initiatives such as OpenROADM and the expertise of Dr. Garrich in experimental SDN applications for optical networks. Second, INSPIRING-SNI will develop an optimization-as-a-service (OaaS) framework for dynamic optimisation of multilayer backbone/metro networks (IP over optical) jointly with metro/access segments via the NorthBound Interface (NBI), greatly widening Dr. Garrich’s background and empowering his career perspectives. The OaaS framework will be based on the open-source network planning tool Net2Plan, developed within the host group, that is receiving a growing international attention and funding from industry and academia. INSPIRING-SNI will include a strategic inter-sectorial secondment at TID to experimentally validate the SBI and NBI proposals and to provide to the host and Dr. Garrich a realistic perspective on telecom operator needs and challenges.

Consortium: 21 companies, research centers and european univeristies
The overall Metro-Haul objective is to architect and design cost-effective, energy-efficient, agile and programmable metro networks that are scalable for 5G access and future requirements, encompassing the design of all-optical metro nodes (including full compute and storage capabilities), which interface effectively with both 5G access and multi-Tbit/s elastic core networks. Metro-Haul has taken the 5G KPIs and already determined their implication for the optical network with these 5 targets: (i) 100 x more 5G capacity supported over the same optical fibre infrastructure, (ii) 10 times less energy consumption, (iii) Latency-aware metro network in which latency-sensitive slices are handled at the metro edge ensuring the metro network adds no additional latency, (iv) End to end SDN-based management framework enabling fast configuration time to set up or reconfigure services handling 5G applications, specifically 1 minute for simple network path set-up and 10 minutes for full installation of a new VNF and 1 hour for setting up a new virtual network slice and (v) reduction in CAPEX of a factor of 10, plus a reduction in OPEX of at least 20%.

SAFE: “A Security Planning Framework for Optical Networks”
PI: Pablo Pavón-Mariño (subproject UPCT)
Duration: from October 2009 to September 2011
Consortium: University of Zagreb (Croatia), Universidad Politecnica de Cartagena (Spain), The Royal Institute of Technology KTH/ICT (Sweden), The Athens Information Technology (Greece)
This project investigates a novel approach to optical networks security. While most existing prevention measures are hardware-oriented, our goal is to achieve significant prevention measures without the need for specialized equipment, i.e. at minimal extra cost, through careful network planning. The idea is to consider the potential consequences of various physical-layer attacks, faults and security threats (e.g., power jamming, fiber cuts, eavesdropping) and optimize the set of optical connections to minimize the possible service disruption which can be caused in case of such scenarios.
