Project ONOFRE

Optical Networks Convergence in the Future Internet

What is ONOFRE?

Traffic forecasts predict an exponential increase (e.g. duplicating every 4 years) in traffic volume in communication networks, with the growing popularity of Triple/Quadruple Play services, cloud computing, social networking or online gaming. Also, forecasts predict an increase in traffic dynamicity and variability, driven by bandwidth-hungry multimedia and mobile services that request network resources on-demand, following patterns not easy to estimate. This context is driving the penetration of optical technologies into the access network, and the adoption into the metro of ROADM-based multilayer IP/MPLS-over-WDM networks with strong constraints in terms of network flexibility and agility to rapid provision of optical bandwidth.

ONOFRE project is focused on an access/metro network convergent design, investigating the effects of NGPON2 and NGPON3 evolutions. Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) mechanisms are studied in depth, analyzing how QoS and clock synchronization requirements constraint the network design. Another goal is to investigate on-demand resource allocation schemes that behave efficiently under high traffic variability scenarios in the ROADM-based multilayer optical metro. Moreover in ONOFRE project we seek on implementing an OpenFlow (SDN) framework for a converged access/metro control plane suitable for this scenario.
