The GIRTEL group also focuses its research work on the development of doctoral theses. In next list, we show a summary of the last 10 years of thesis defended or in progress, including the current work status of the Ph.D. candidates:

  • 2006-2011. Optimization and Planning of WDM Transparent Optical Networks (Cum Laude, European Mention, Quality Mention of the PhD, COIT Best Thesis Award). Ph.D. student: Ramón Aparicio Pardo. Supervisor: Pablo Pavon. Ramón Aparicio completed a post-doc in Orange Labs (2012-2013), then he moved to Telecom Bretagne, now is Associate Professor at the University of Nice (France).
  • 2008-2012. Optimization of optical interconnection and communication networks (Cum Laude, European Mention, Quality Mention of the PhD). Ph.D. student: María Belén García Manrubia. Supervisor: Pablo Pavon. Belén García is working as a lecturer in Centro ISEN (University of Murcia).
  • 2010-2014. Development and Evaluation of Analytical Models for Applications and Cross-layer Techniques in Vehicular Networks (Cum Laude, European Mention, FPU). Ph.D. student. Carolina García Costa. Supervisors: Esteban Egea López, Joan García Haro. Carolina is Senior Software Engineer and Manager at Logidyn.
  • 2012-2016. Proposal for the Design and Deployment of Mobility and Security Services in Vehicular Networks (Cum Laude, European Mention, Quality Mention of the PhD). Ph.D. student: Pedro J. Fernández Ruiz. Supervisors: José Santa, Antonio F. Skarmeta. Pedro is now a senior research fellow in the area of EU projects at University of Murcia.
  • 2012-2017.Planning and optimization of multilayer optical networks (Cum Laude, European Mention, Quality Mention of the PhD). Ph.D. student: · José Luis Izquierdo Zaragoza. Supervisors: Pablo Pavón, Victoria Bueno. José Luis Izquierdo was Head of Research at Aire Networks (national network operator) until 2017, and PostDoc at the Group of Optical Communications, Univ. Politécnica Cataluña and now is SDN Architect at Google Network Cluster SRE at Dublin.
  • 2015-2019. Novel SDN and NFV techniques for optical network orchestration (Cum Laude, European Mention, Quality Mention of the PhD). Ph.D. student: · José J. Pedreño Manresa. Supervisors: Pablo Pavón, José L. Izquierdo. José J. is now working in ADVA Optical Networking.
  • 2015-2019. Planning and Optimization in Optical Network for Future Internet (Cum Laude, FPI). Ph.D. student: Francisco J. Moreno Muro. Supervisors: Pablo Pavón Mariño, María V. Bueno Delgado. Francisco is now postdoctoral researcher in GIRTEL group.
  • 2017-2020. Contribution to the Planning and Deployment of Key Enabling Technologies for Smart Cities and Smart Factories. Ph.D. student: J.L. Romero-Gázquez. Supervisor: María V. Bueno Delgado. José Luis is now Senior Engineer in MOVISAT.
  • 2017- (expected date 2021). Contribution to the Digital Transformation through Industry 4.0 paradigm and its Enabling Technologies. Ph.D. student: G. Cañavate Cruzado. Supervisors: María V. Bueno Delgado. G. Cañavate is Project Manager in CETEM.
  • 2018-(expected date 2021). ICT Solutions for Active and Healthy Aging at Home, in the Workplace and in Society. Ph.D. student: F.J. Melero Muñoz. Supervisors: María V. Bueno Delgado and Josefina Garrido. F.J. Melero is Project Manager in CETEM.
  • 2019-(expected date 2022). An IoT smart controller for diabetes mellitus using machine learning algorithms. Ph.D. student: Phuwadol Viroonluecha. Supervisors: Esteban Egea López and José Santa Lozano. P. Viroonluecha is FP researcher (FPI, PRE2018-084260, 2019).
  • 2020-(expected date 2023). Ph.D. student: Juan José Ortega gras. Supervisors: María V. Bueno-Delgado and Josefina garrido. J.J. Ortega is Project Manager in CETEM.
